Student Mentoring Initiative at ECMS:
We are looking for mentors, adults who are interested in providing a young person with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement, and constructive examples.
Mentors are not “cool friends.” They are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help bring out strengths that are already there. Many children in our school system need guidance, support, and encouragement aimed at developing competence and character. The introduction of a mentor in these student’s lives often can mean the difference between success and failure at school. In the amount of time you spend watching your favorite weekly TV show, you could be mentoring and changing a young life.
(The commitment is for Mentors to meet with a student of one hour, one day per week at ECMS. The mentors will receive an 90 minute orientation and training from the Cobb Mentoring Matters and will provide some electronic forms that will need to be completed.
The East Cobb Middle School Council is focused on increasing the Community and Parent Involvement at ECMS. One of the initiatives that has come out of this program is the Student Mentoring Initiative.
Research shows that school based mentoring programs have many benefits including:
- Reduction of school absences
- Improved academic performance
- Improved behavior
- Reduced violent behavior
- Improved relationship with parents
- Increased parental involvement with the student’s education
- Reduced drug and alcohol use
If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please go to cobbmentoringmatters.org, read about the program, and sign up to be a mentor for an East Cobb Middle School student by clicking on "I'd like to be a mentor" at the top of the page.
